Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Waste Management

With a head office in Barcelona, Spain, and operations in more than a dozen countries around the world, Zicla has been finding innovative uses for waste since 2005. The company is a true promoter of a circular economy: the waste that is produced by the residents of a city is transformed by Zicla into new materials, products, and services that are used to improve the lives of everyone.

Zicla’s efforts are split into two streams. The first relates to its work with businesses and organizations, advising their leadership on how to best recover workplace waste and create sustainable opportunities within their teams. Zicla walks the walk, too, and its own workplace uses recyclable utilities and separates its waste for recovery.

The second stream of the company is the creation of recycled products to improve urban areas. “Recycling plays a key role in the circular economy, and it is possible to make business out of waste,” says Alfredo Balmaceda, the founder and director of Zicla.

No two Zicla projects are the same. The company comes up with localized recycling projects based around community and organizational need, converting waste that has the potential for recovery into items that, in turn, work to promote a more sustainable environment.

Take, for example, the Zebra and Zipper mobility systems. Created by Zicla, these systems are flower pots or plastic nodes that create inexpensive and effective cycling lanes. They are made from 100% recycled PVC plastic, materials extracted from old electric sheathing and pipes. This product alone has been recognized with several eco-design awards.

Other examples include sets of tables and chairs made from urban solid waste, and flexible urban planters formed from recovered tires. The impact of saving these materials from landfill has been impressive: between 2009 and 2015, Zicla used almost 1,265 tons of PVC waste in its projects, which prevented the emission of 2,325 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

With a little bit of creativity, it is as Balmaceda says: waste can be good business!
