From Dream to Reality: Go Bike Takes Off
In 2011, Go Bike was born. Starting small, Samy and his passionate team began by organizing weekly cycling events in Cairo. They understood the need to make cycling more accessible, so they rented a warehouse, bought bikes and rented them for those who cannot afford to buy one. It was a win-win – promoting a healthy activity while tackling traffic congestion.
To expand their reach and impact, they launched the “Cycling for a Cause” concept, combining sports with cultural and social initiatives.
“These Friday morning rides brought the community together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and supporting new cyclists. adds Samy
In 2018, Go Bike introduced the “Sekketak Khadra” initiative, focusing on improving cycling infrastructure with bike racks and sports facilities. This project, supported by a 2016 memorandum of understanding with Cairo’s governor, the Danish Embassy in Cairo, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and Nahdet El Mahrousa association, aimed to create a more bike-friendly city and encourage a shift towards sustainable transportation.
Witnessing the frustration of navigating Cairo’s congested streets, and the challenges of public perception and safety, Samy decided to write a book. Named after the initiative “Sekketak Khadra” (Your Green Path), it became a blueprint in 2017 for promoting cycling culture in which he tackled everything from bike selection to traffic safety, challenging misconceptions about cycling, especially for women and people with disabilities
