A lot of human activities produce waste, which we tend to consider as an unhelpful burden. In Morocco, one woman is fighting to give a second chance to organic waste with her new eco-friendly project, ENRD2_Engrais Bio. Khaoula Remmal sees value in organic waste, which can be re-used and integrated into a greener, fairer and more sustainable economy. “Our goal is to impact [positively] the environment by using innovative technology and implementing resource efficiency measures,” she said.

Remmal, an engineering expert in energy and sustainable development, wanders through fields with a big smile and a determined look. She has come on a site visit to the dairy farmers who help make her project into a reality. Her goal? Transforming organic waste into energy. Specifically, ENRD2_Engrais Bio aims to create electricity and heat from organic waste through a co-generation system.

ENRD2_Engrais Bio’s sustainable rationale has a twofold environmental impact: it reduces organic waste, while also creating a cleaner source of heat and energy. “By implementing a bio-gas plant, we will be able to produce on average of 400 cubic meters of bio-gas and thermal energy per year,” Remmal said. “This project will also allow us to re-use 155 tons of compost annually in the Fez region.” To achieve these goals, Remmal continues to enhance connections between rural communities and the industrial sector.

Remmal believes that – by reducing organic waste and energy poverty – her project addresses social inequalities as well. “A better environment is a prerequisite for solving social problems, because it actively engages the local community.”
