Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Waste Management

Annine Fadye, a local social enterprise, is transforming Lebanon’s glass waste problem into a beautiful solution. By repurposing discarded bottles into stunning glassware, Annine Fadye is not only reducing waste but also creating a sustainable, locally-made alternative to imported products.

Since 2022, Anthony Abdel Karim observed a shortage of local glass manufacturers and a rising trend of imported glassware and bottles in Lebanon. The lack of effective waste management and recycling initiatives resulted in these glass products polluting the environment or occupying valuable landfill space.

Driven by a passion for green entrepreneurship and a desire to offer eco-friendly solutions to the F&B industry, Annine Fadye was founded in 2024. Despite challenges in promoting the value of upcycled goods, they have persevered, forging strong relationships and showcasing their exceptional craftsmanship. As of end of 2024 they have upcycled over 30,000 bottles into glassware and crushed glass pebbles

The overlooked treasure of glass bottle recycling offers a wealth of possibilities for sustainable decor and eco-friendly crafts. In Lebanon, millions of glass bottles enter the waste stream annually, a staggering figure considering their potential for reinvention. Annine Fadye is leading the charge in transforming these ordinary objects into extraordinary creations. Their innovative ideas range from vases and candle holders to ashtrays, demonstrating the transformative power of upcycling. In May 2024 they participated in We Design Beirut Art Exhibition where they showcased the material “glass” to designers and creatives. This exhibition was a great opportunity for them to connect with potential customers, as their actual customers consist of 20 concept bars, cafés, restaurants, and guesthouses to whom they are producing a local alternative to typically imported glassware for the F&B sector.

Anthony Abdel Karim credits the SwitchMed program for providing invaluable guidance and support especially to SwitchMed partner in Lebanon: Fondation Diane’s team of experts. The Switchers ToolBox was very efficient according to him, to help them design products and services with an eye on longevity, reparability and reuse, all while minimizing waste.

Through the Green Business Plan, we were able to define our goals, chart a path towards achieving them, and establish measurable benchmarks for success.” Admitted founder Anthony Abdel Karim
