Sustainable Textiles and Clothing

Amidst the devastation following the Beirut explosion, a ray of hope emerged from a seemingly simple initiative – a sewing circle offering women a space for psycho-social support. Founded by Meelie Pemberton, WingWoman Lebanon (WWL) blossomed from these humble beginnings into a thriving social enterprise with a mission that resonates deeply: empowering women to create sustainable futures.

WWL operates under a unique NGO model, tackling two critical issues simultaneously: environmental sustainability and economic empowerment for marginalized women. Their flagship products are reusable period pads and diapers, carefully crafted by women hailing from vulnerable communities in Lebanon, including Syrian and Palestinian refugees.

More than just products, these reusable essentials represent a revolution in accessibility and impact. Each reusable diaper pack eliminates the need for approximately 6,000 disposable diapers, significantly reducing landfill waste. Similarly, WWL’s period pads offer a lifespan of three years, replacing roughly 790 disposable pads and their associated environmental footprint.

Beyond product innovation, WWL prioritizes education and awareness. They actively challenge the stigma and taboos surrounding menstruation through comprehensive educational sessions. These sessions provide accurate scientific information, empowering women to make informed choices about their health and hygiene.

The impact of WWL’s work extends beyond environmental benefits

They have created over 27 jobs, providing a vital source of income and fostering financial independence for women who might otherwise struggle to meet basic needs. This economic empowerment extends beyond immediate employment; WWL offers flexible working conditions, allowing women to manage other responsibilities while working from home, further contributing to their overall wellbeing.

The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Breaking the silence surrounding menstruation, particularly within marginalized communities, demanded sensitivity and perseverance. WWL’s success lies in their commitment to open dialogue, creating a safe space for women to voice concerns and receive support.

Their latest initiative, an 8-week pads making training program, exemplifies their commitment to skills development and long-term impact. This program equips participants with the knowledge and skills to meticulously manufacture reusable pads, producing 100 individual pads upon completion.

Building Impactful Partnerships

WWL’s impact extends beyond direct beneficiaries to a wider network. Their sustainable and ethically produced products find their way to those most in need through partnerships with NGOs like ISWA, International Medical Corps, Oxfam, and local organizations like Borderless.

Through partnerships like this one with ISWA Lebanon for example, WWL is creating a ripple effect of positive change. Their latest initiative with the organization offered an 8 week pad making training which provides job opportunities for women, equipping them with valuable skills, and fostering a brighter future for all.

Today, WWL stands as a testament to the transformative power of social entrepreneurship. Their journey, fueled by resilience and a genuine desire to empower, serves as an inspiration to aspiring changemakers worldwide. As Meelie Pemberton passionately encourages, “Try, give it a go – you never know where it will lead.”

Looking ahead, WWL seeks partnerships with NGOs and increased market access to further their impactful mission. Their dedication to environmental and human well-being remains unwavering, paving the way for a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
